Curbside Bin Guide: What You Can Recycle in LA County’s Largest Cities

Recycling looks a little different depending on where you live, even within Los Angeles County. While some rules are consistent, others vary by city, especially when it comes to plastics and food waste.

To make it easier, we pulled together curbside recycling and organics guidelines for LA County’s ten most populous cities. Here’s what goes in your bins and where to learn more.

A Quick Note on Plastics #1, #2, and #5:

If you’ve ever flipped a container over to check the number in the triangle, you’re not alone. Those numbers refer to the type of plastic, and not all of them are recyclable in your curbside bin. When in doubt, stick to the big three: #1, #2, and #5 — and make sure they’re clean, dry, and empty.

  • #1 (PET or PETE): Think water bottles, soda bottles, and clear food containers.

  • #2 (HDPE): Milk jugs, detergent bottles, and other sturdy containers.

  • #5 (PP): Yogurt tubs, takeout containers, and medicine bottles.

Don’t See Your City?

Most cities in LA County offer curbside recycling and organics collection — but the rules vary. If your city isn’t listed here, start with your city’s Public Works or Sanitation Department. Your waste hauler (Athens Services, Republic, Waste Management, etc.) may also have a breakdown of what goes where.

For broader guidance, CalRecycle has statewide resources and links to local programs.
